As always, thanks to Yuri Bellamy for collaborating with me on these posts!
I opened my eyes to the same four terracotta colored walls that had become my prison. I’d tested each crack, every dip and bulge, searching for any weakness I might be able to exploit. So far, nothing worked. I was stuck, in hell of all places. The irony wasn’t lost on me.
No windows, no light source beyond the glowing fixtures bolted to the high ceiling, no way to mark the passage of time.
“Those bastard demons.” They appeared in my home and somehow thought they’d just scoop me up and walk out the door. Guess no one told them I’m not a fragile flower. The bodyguard was a decent fighter, the other guy was a wimp. But the wimp had a few tricks up his sleeve.
Magic. “Sneaky son of a…”
Magic is what got me here and according to my kidnapper, it’s what kept me here.
I palmed the amulet around my neck, remembering the warning as the red jewel in the center vibrated. “This magic is old, but effective. The amulet will allow you to remain alive while in hell. Remove it, and you will die here.”
Those were the words of warning that kept me from yanking the necklace from my body.
“Look, there. See, I told you. Efrayim really brought a human here.” Three male demons stood outside my door, peering into the barred opening cut into the stone. “What kind of human is she?”
Efrayim. I’d heard the name often enough. Duke of hell, supposed leader of wherever I was, and all around slimy rat bastard. He called the shots, but he couldn’t be bothered with dealing with the meatbag directly. He made the mistake of calling me that back at the house. My knuckles taught him a quick lesson.
“Move along. You do not belong here.”
I recognized the voice as the second demon who arrived in my bedroom. He visited me often, simply staring at me for long periods or shooing away the gawkers.
When the lollygaggers were hurried away, he took up his normal position outside the door. Only this visit was different. He came inside.
“You are a very strange human.”
Misery had told me there were many humans in hell. Why was I strange? I looked into his silver eyes and held my ground. He was a good fighter. No way would I let my guard down.
“Our encounter has plagued me. How is it that you fight the way that you do?”
Ah, so he wasn’t used to people fighting back? Was he looking for a rematch?
“We will fight again. I am curious to see what you will do this time.”
Fight? I looked him up and down. His tall, brawny physique was probably imposing for most, but it made him just a bit slow. If he attacked, I’d defend myself, but I wasn’t going to fight just for the heck of it. I folded my arms over my chest and shook my head. “I am not your lap dog and I’m not here for your amusement.”
“You are here at my master’s command. He has never said I cannot fight you.”
Master? Hmm… “He probably never said you could either.” I bent my knees and prepared myself for a possible attack. The bite in the demon’s voice dripped with irritation. How long would he be able to keep his hands to himself?
The bodyguard’s brow furrowed and he crossed his arms over his massive chest. “Well, no, but…”
“Well then. You don’t have explicit instructions to fight me. Does he even know you’re here with me? Why do you come to watch me?”
The bodyguard’s gaze darkened and he growled. “He does not need to know I am here. He will not care as long as you remain uninjured.”
I took a step toward him and rolled my shoulders back. “Uninjured? Why would he care if the human was hurt?”
“You are Misery’s woman, as far as my master is concerned. He wants to teach Misery a lesson, not start an interfamily war with him.”
Misery’s woman? That’s what this was about? “What lesson is he trying to teach him?” I could have corrected him, but I wasn’t about to miss an opportunity to gather all the facts. I’d need every detail if I was going to get out of here.
“You do not need to know.” He reached for me, but I evaded his grasp. Then he charged. “Fight me, human!”
I remained still until the last moment. When I sidestepped him, he almost tumbled head over heels onto the floor. He was unbalanced, just like I wanted. One quick spin and a kick to the jaw and the demon was on the floor. I waited, watching him hold his face in one hand while he balled the other into a fist.
The shapeless dresses they gave me to wear had slits up the sides that allowed for a full range of motion for any kicks I’d need. From the looks of it, I was about to put those slits to good use.
The downed demon picked himself up and stared at me with lifted brows, shaking his head.”Where did you learn to fight? You’re almost half my size, yet you managed to knock me to the floor.”
“Answer my questions and I’ll answer yours.” I looked on as he dusted himself off. “What lesson is your master trying to teach Misery?”
The demon smiled. He didn’t wear the expression well; it made his thin lips even thinner. He ran his hand through his wild black locks and advanced on me. “Why are humans are more trouble than they’re worth? My master wants to remind Misery what he should be doing, and it’s not you.”
“He went through all of this just to interfere with Misery’s sex life? Your master must not have enough to do.” This Efrayim seemed to take cock blocking to an entirely new level.
He laughed and wiped his brow. “Not his sex life, girl. His choice of potential mothers for his future children. My master wants Misery to breed a full-blooded demon heir at some point. A half and half would be unacceptable trash.”
“Trash?” Who was he calling trash? I didn’t think, I didn’t even hesitate. I stepped right up to him and slapped him. “Watch your mouth. For a race of people who think they’re superior, you seem to be awfully afraid of us.”
Black coloring swarmed his silver irises and he grabbed my hand ultra fast, before I had a chance to step out of reach. “I’m not afraid of you, little girl, but if you keep running your mouth, I will give you a reason to fear me.”
Oh damn. I think I just woke the kraken.
